Periodontics is one of the specialties of dentistry concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting bone of the teeth. Here at Silvestri & Comfort Family Dentistry, we take your periodontal health very seriously. Your gums are an important foundation for your teeth and provide stability for all of your dental work, so it is important to keep them healthy for many reasons. Periodontal disease is the most common chronic bacterial infection in adults (affecting 3 out of 4), and if not treated properly, it can spread rapidly throughout your entire foundation and threaten your overall health. Periodontal disease attacks just below the gum line in the sulcus where they cause the attachment of the tooth and its supporting tissues to break down. As the tissues are damaged, the sulcus develops into a pocket. Naturally, the more severe the disease, the greater the depth of the pocket. The severity of the disease is classified in two stages, gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form that only affects the gums but may lead to a more serious, destructive form if left untreated called periodontitis. Some factors can increase the risk of developing periodontal disease. They are the following:
There are also several warning signs that can signal a problem:
It is possible to have periodontal disease and have no warning signs. That is one of the many reasons why regular dental prophylaxis and periodontal exams are very important. Treatment methods depend upon the type of disease and how advanced the condition is. Good oral hygiene is essential to keep periodontal disease from becoming serious or recurring. Remember…you do not have to lose teeth to periodontal disease! Brush, floss, and schedule regular dental visits for a lifetime of healthy smiles. |
